Epixego is an EdTech career and mentoring platform serving students, employers, recruiters, and group administrators. As the platform grew, its aging Webpack and Create React App setup struggled with performance and reliability. Eternalight modernized the frontend to address slow page loads, broken features, and the limitations of its existing technology foundation.
EdTech platforms that serve learners, employers, and programme administrators at once tend to accumulate weight rather than shed it. Roles multiply, dashboards grow heavier with data, and the build tooling underneath quietly stops keeping pace. What starts as a slightly sluggish page becomes a product people avoid opening, and a codebase the team is reluctant to touch.
The homepage took around 30 seconds to load, and moving between inner pages added another 10 to 15 seconds each time. For a platform that students, employers, and group administrators are meant to check regularly, that scale of delay stops being an inconvenience and becomes the reason people quietly stop logging in at all.
The entire application shipped as one multi-megabyte JavaScript file. A student signing in to check a single job posting was downloading the whole platform to do it, including every dashboard, table, and admin screen they would never open. Nothing loaded on demand, so every visit paid the full cost upfront.
Material-UI v4 and an older React Router had aged out from under the app, and Node's crypto module was still handling client-side password hashing in a browser it was never meant to run in. Unused components, leftover code paths, and inactive dependencies had also piled up, inflating the bundle and obscuring what was load-bearing.
Navigation, table exports, and the messaging system were all unreliable by the time the engagement began. These were not edge cases: they were the everyday workflows employers, recruiters, and group admins depended on to post jobs, pull cohort reports, and reach their members. Manual workarounds had grown up around each failure.
Recovering a platform like this starts with diagnosis rather than delivery. Before any code changes, the priority is understanding why the application is slow and why specific features broke, so the work targets root causes instead of visible symptoms. From there the build foundation is replaced, dependencies are upgraded only where they solve an identified problem, and broken workflows are rebuilt on the new stack.
Rollup Visualizer was added first, so the team could see exactly which dependencies were consuming bundle space instead of optimizing blind. Webpack and Create React App were then replaced with Vite, which serves modules on demand and rebuilds only what changes. That single architectural shift took page loads from tens of seconds to effectively instant.
Material-UI moved from v4 to v6, React Router was brought current, and the browser-incompatible crypto package was swapped for CryptoJS for password hashing. Each upgrade was chosen because it fixed an identified problem, not applied as a blanket version bump. Unused code and dependencies were audited out at the same time.
Authentication, session handling, and navigation were rewritten around current React Router hooks: useNavigate, useLocation, and useParams. These replaced deprecated patterns such as history.push and the match prop, which no longer existed in the updated router. That work is what brought login and in-app navigation back to working order.
Cohort and dashboard tables were migrated to Material Table, CSV and PDF exports were rebuilt on the updated export API, and the Socket.IO client was upgraded to repair a broken real-time messaging connection. The build was also reconfigured to split the monolithic bundle into smaller, separately loaded chunks.
A 30-second homepage load became near-instant, and inner pages that took 10 to 15 seconds now resolve in milliseconds, turning a platform people avoided into one they can open daily.
Employers post jobs and manage candidates, group admins pull reports and run cohorts, and messaging works in real time, all without the manual workarounds that had become normal.
Smaller chunked bundles, current dependencies, and a cleaner codebase let Epixego developers ship changes faster, with far less risk of one update quietly breaking something else.
Eternalight modernized Epixego’s frontend with Vite and updated dependencies, improving performance and maintainability. The team used React, MUI, Redux, React Router DOM, and Socket.IO, following a structured process from wireframing to launch and user feedback.
